Sure, it was warm and muggy. Sure, it was the weekend and the dogs could've been splashing in the dog pool. Did that stop the Therapeutic Paws of Canada Team from pitching in at the Pickering Petapalooza? No way!

Piper had her first experience working with Therapy Dogs and their handlers. We were at the TPOC booth where I helped Team Leader Sandra (Tea's handler) and Penny's handlers, Andrew and Joy, with providing information about how a dog becomes a certified Therapy Dog.

The best public relations, however, was provided by the dogs, including Piper (and many others who were in the booth before and after Piper and me.) It was a great opportunity for Piper to watch the pro's in action and experience many admiring strangers coming up to hug and pat her.  Plus, she made friends with Jet, a little man recently rescued from the Caribbean. As you can see, he's got the winning smile and friendly demeanor that are the stuff of Therapy Dogs. Perhaps we'll meet Jet and his owner, Alexandra, some day in a shared future of Pet Therapists.

I'm a life long owner and respecter of dogs with previous work experience in cancer care. Although I've long marveled at the gifts animals bring to help humans feel better, this is my first foray into working with Dog-As-Therapist... which makes this a journey of discovery Misty and I will share.
